NMC thanked nursing and midwifery professionals on Covid-19 Day of Reflection

On March 8, the NMC marked the Covid-19 Day of Reflection – six years since the UK’s first lockdown of the pandemic.

It was an opportunity to commemorate those who lost their lives, and to express gratitude for the selfless efforts of the UK’s nurses, midwives and nursing associates on the frontline of the national response.

Paul Rees MBE, Chief Executive and Registrar, said: “During an unprecedented and frightening period in history, nurses, midwives and nursing associates selflessly put the health and wellbeing of the nation above their own.

“Tragically, it was reported that more than 150 nursing and midwifery professionals, and hundreds more of their colleagues working in health and care, lost their lives in doing so.”

He added: “Wherever they worked, nursing and midwifery professionals brought expertise, skill and compassion to those who needed it, often in the most challenging circumstances.

“Covid-19 changed the professions, and society, in ways that continue to shape health and social care services.

“The dedication and compassion shown by nursing and midwifery professionals during that time stands as a lasting testament to the vital role they play in keeping the public safe and well.”
